2025 August Krogh Distinguished Lecturer, Dr. Michael Hedrick

We are delighted to announce that Dr. Michael Hedrick (Emeritus Professor, California State University – East Bay) received the 2025 August Krogh Distinguished Lectureship award at the 2025 American Physiology Summit! He shared his body of research on how frogs and toads (anurans) regulate their lymphatic system in a lecture entitled, “What Goes Down Must Come Up: Regulation of Lymph Movement in Anuran Amphibians.”

Dr. Hedrick earned his Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of British Columbia in 1991 and began his research career as an Assistant Professor at California State University, East Bay (formerly CSU Hayward) in 1994, following a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Wisconsin. A world leader in comparative respiratory, cardiovascular, and exercise physiology, Dr. Hedrick is also an advocate for research in comparative physiology.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Hedrick has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles, one book, and five book chapters, with his work has been cited more than 2,000 times. He has delivered 12 invited lectures, given 36 departmental seminars at various institutions, and contributed to or mentored an additional 93 poster presentations.

In recognition of his outstanding research contributions, Dr. Hedrick has received numerous prestigious awards, including being named a Fellow of the American Physiological Society in 2018 and the California Academy of Sciences in 2008. Other honors include a 2009 APS Research Career Enhancement Award, 1992-1994 NIH National Research Service Award, and the George and Miriam Phillips Outstanding Professor Award from CSU East Bay in 2007.

Dr. Hedrick is a highly respected member of the scientific community. His leadership roles include serving on the APS Summit Leadership Committee (2024–2026), as Editor-in-Chief of Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A (since 2013), Chair of the CEPS Section Steering Committee (2015–2018), APS Councilor (2020–2023), and Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at CSU East Bay (2008–2011). He has also contributed to numerous department and university committees throughout his tenure.

The August Krogh Distinguished Lectureship of the Comparative & Evolutionary Section (CEPS) is awarded to a member of the American Physiological Society (APS) who has made major and meritorious contributions to the scientific areas represented by CEPS. The Krogh Lectureship, sponsored by Novo Nordisk Foundation, is the most prestigious award given by the section.
